The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Wednesday told operators to start complying with its regulations or face penalty. At a meeting with operators, the TRAI has told the telecom companies that once a regulation is issued then it has to be complied with. In the past, there have been instances where operators have delayed implementation of regulations whenever it hit their business. For instance, a regulation issued in 2011 on valued added services is yet to be complied with.
The TRAI had asked telecom companies to take the consent of subscribers of the users before activating value added services. However, instead of complying with the regulation, the operators offered to set up a new system with a claim that this would address consumer complaints. TRAI was forced to issue a show cause notice to the operators. Even in the case of mobile number portability, operators have not fully complied with the regulations.
