Mumbaikars watching their favourite afternoon shows were in for interruptions on both Tuesday and Wednesday when their television screens went blank. While many thought it was a usual technical problem, the actual reason was a bit more interesting than a mundane snag. The disruptions, said broadcasters and cable/DTH operators, were caused by a natural phenomenon called sun outage.
While TV viewers complained that several channels were affected for around half an hour, officials claimed that the problem did not last that long. The outage affected about 20 channels. Explaining the phenomenon, officials said it occurs when the sun, the satellite and the receiving station fall in one line, and solar radiation causes disruption in satellite signals.
Source said the satellite Intelsat 20 came between the sun and the receiving station, affecting the channels that were being beamed through it. The phenomenon is expected to recur between 12.44pm and 12.49pm on Thursday.
