Was watching "Sherlock" season 4 with dad yesterday(he was watching this series for the first time), and he said that the old series starring late Jeremy Brett was much better than this. Searched the internet just for arguing with him that the new one is better, and found it. Watched an episode, and won't say better or worse but I absolutely loved it. It has as many as 41 episodes over 7 seasons, and I'm really enjoying watching it!
Critics and viewers liked Jeremy Brett as Sherlock so much that many of them say : "He did not play Sherlock Holmes, he was the Sherlock Holmes for us!!"
But gradually Brett, a method actor, became obsessed with the Sherlock character, often taking method acting to the extreme to fully embody the spirit of Holmes, which later contributed to his untimely death in 1995, with 18 episodes still to be made(which were never made in his honour)..
“Some actors fear if they play Sherlock Holmes for a very long run the character will steal their soul, leave no corner for the original inhabitant", he said in one of his final interviews.
