Why did Prasar Bharati (the owner) shutdown the DD Metro channel suddenly despite the fact that the channel was going really well at that time?
DD Metro had a wide variety of shows which included entertainment, movies, daily soaps etc and also huge set of audience, then what made DD India to replace it with their news channel DD News
Prasar Bharati shut down the DD Metro ( commonly known as DD 2) on Nov 3,2003.
It was a set back for many, as at that time only 2 channels were available in most of the India. There were part of India where digital or cable operators din't reach. So many Indians were relying on these two channels only for the Information, news, education programmes and entertainment.
Also, for the part of India where digital or cable operators had reach, this was a blow as this channel used to disseminate all type of programmes ranging from education, entertainment and reality shows. All this for free of cost.
So when this was such a success then why did they shut it down or properly say why did they change it into a News Channel called DD News.
DD metro was a great success in 90s as this was the only channel accessible to 80% of India apart from the DD1 news channel.
It had great range of programmes which every 90s kid can remember and cherish. In fact there were programmes for each age group like Ramayan, Mahabharat, Shaktiman, comedy shows and reality shows.
The first nail
When coming to 21st century, there were many broadcasters for the entertainment genre and the reach of cable operators were increased all because of freeing up the economy all sorts of digital operators were making entry in the indian market.
At that time to increase the viewership and to be in the competition with other big names in the entertainment world at that time, Prasar Bharti started the venture with Nine Gold known as Metro gold which used to telecast on DD Metro in the evening time from 7 PM to 10 PM. It went very good and gained exceptional popularity.
After which DD Metro and Nine Gold wanted to enter in a contract for which terms could not be fixed and the deal never happened.
This led to the discontinuation of the Metro Gold and viewership again came back to the square one.
This was the first nail in the coffin for DD Metro.
