Tamil passions are running high after 20 suspected red sandalwood smugglers were gunned down by neighbouring Andhra Pradesh police near Tirupati on Tuesday morning. According to Tamil Nadu government, 12 of the total 20 killed are from Tamil Nadu. A few hours after the alleged 'encounter' took place, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam shot off a letter to his AP counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu raising serious doubts over the veracity of the incident.
In his letter, he said that he was distressed to hear the news of the death of poor 'smugglers'. However he added that he won't say that they were not engaged in illegal activities. All Tamil political parties, which miss no occasion or opportunity to raise the issue of Tamils, also took on the AP government for the 'encounter'.
Even the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was quick to issue a notice to AP chief secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) seeking an explanation.
