The woman and her family members protested the police action saying it was "religious" flag which they hoisted as a mark of respect to God for the woman bearing a child after several years of her marriage.
A Nalanda Muslim woman was arrested on Thursday for unfurling flag with moon and crescent at her residence. Though the woman said it was religious flag with moon and crescent, some locals alleged it was Pakistan flag.
Nalanda Police raided her house at Biharsharif, district headquarters of Nalanda, and seized the flag “resembling Pakiatan flag”. The woman and her family members protested the police action saying it was “religious” flag which they hoisted as a mark of respect to God for the woman bearing a child after several years of her marriage. Last week, Patna Police had arrested a Popular Front of India leader Mohammed Taufiq for shouting pro-Pakistan slogans during a march in support of TV evangelist Zakir Naik.
Nalanda Police said local residents and some mediapersons reported about a flag resembling Pakistan flag unfurling at house of one Shabana Anwar since Wednesday. Shabana stays at place of her father Anwarul Anwar at Ward number 36 at Kharadi mohalla under Laheri police station of Biharsharif. As local residents also lodged protest with the police to take immediate action, Nalanda Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Sudhir Kumar and Sub Divisional Police officer S Rahman raided Anwar’s house and seized the flag.
SDO Sudhir Kumar said: “We are questioning the family and neighbours to know the intention behind Anwar family action”.
The incident sparked immediate political reactions. BJP Assembly Opposition leader Prem Kumar said: “Such things cannot be tolerated. Last week, one person was arrested for shouting pro-Pakistan slogans and now Nalanda incident took place. It is the time Nitish government took harsh action”. Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Dr CP Thakur sarcastingly added: “One can expect such things under a secular government”. HAM (S) spokesperson Danish Rizwan demanded strong action against ones showing pro-Pakistan sentiments.
JD (U) spokesperson Ajay Alok, however, said the police had been asked to take strong action. “We cannot tolerate it. Police did act in Patna case and Nalanda police is also doing its duty”.
