MPEG2,MPEG4 and latest HEVC are all compression techniques using which you can transmit the channels. These formats decide the required bandwidth on a TP.

For ex :
Assume MPEG2 requires 10 MBPS
MPEG4 only requires 5 MBPS
HEVC they say it only requires 2-3 MBPS

There is a perception that MPEG4 provides better quality on channels which even ADTV was claiming in the ads. Then TRAI took objection to that and ADTV stopped those ads

Mpeg 4 channels take less space than mpeg 2 channels
