Theatre owners irked by Kamal's plan to release film on DTH


Some theatre owners in Chennai are upset by actor Kamal Hassan's decision to launch his upcoming movie 'Vishwaroopam' on the DTH platform eight hours before it is released in theatres worldwide.

""We are upset with the decision,"" said AbiramiBSE 4.71 % Ramanathan, a key member of one of the theatre owners' associations in the city, which met on Thursday on this issue.

The association members want to meet Kamal Hassan on Saturday regarding this.

"The movie may be good or bad. But why is Kamal taking a risk through the DTH route," Ramanathan said.

The spokesperson for Kamal Hassan wasn't available for comments.

The big budget 'Vishwaroopam' is ready for release but the dates are yet to be announced. Its music will be launched in three cities - Coimbatore, Madurai and Chennai - on Friday.

Viswaroopam has been ready for the last few months say sources. But Kamal's demand for an exorbitant price had distributors in second thoughts and the rumour is that noone was willing to pay such a high price. It seems the actor then decided on collaborating with a DTH operator to release the movie on DTH eight hours prior to the release of the movie in theatres.

It is rumoured that the DTH operator has paid the actor about Rs 10 crore for this. Apparently, since there is encryption it is not possible to copy the film and hence piracy can be curbed.

Kamal had called for a producers' meeting last week to explain this new age revolution to them. While they seemed to be receptive to the idea, theatre owners are not pleased and there's rumours they want t0 boycott the film. Their logic is that if it is released on DTH then people would not be willing to go to the theatre to watch the movie resulting in losses for them. But Kamal has told them that the DTH release will be a teaser and drive audiences to the theatre. This has not gone down with the theatre owners. Their worry is that if Kamal starts this trend other filmmakers will follow suit.

The president of the theatre owners association has approached Chief Minister Jayalalitha to now sort out the matter.

Kamal Haasan is not going back on his decision to release his new film Viswaroopam on the DTH platform.

On Sunday, the actor-filmmaker defended his move to introduce the film in pay-per-view mode on direct-to-home (DTH) networks on the day of its theatrical release. He said, the move needed understanding rather than spot judgements and associated anxieties.

In an audiocast on social network SoundCloud, the actor said the digital screener should be seen as opening new vistas for legitimate revenues for cinema at a time when video piracy was wrecking the industry. The screener would be a one-time affair priced at Rs. 1,000.

“This is targeted at a niche segment that wants to be entertained in the comfort of their homes. It is purely for the excitement of watching it on the first day. The cinema hall experience is still something else,” he said.

But how piracy can be stopped?
One can easily record the movie through a camera.

Yeah, bcoz ultimately theater release is also happening so, piracy will definitely happen. Unless Theater Owners start prohibiting Mobile Phones or any Electronic device (like Shirdi Saibaba temple) , piracy will continue to happen

Actually i read in other forum,reliance is also in the list.

They are in talk with Reliance Entertainment for Distribution rights. But its there is lot of time for Movie to be released, hence Reliance Digital TV too have ample time to acquire this Movie.
