Kamal Haasan’s much-talked-about Vishwaroopam, mired now in controversy, is all set to hit homes via DTH a week after its theatrical release. And, it has also been decided to revise the price downward from its earlier Rs 1,000. According to sources, it will work like any other film in the service provider's ‘pay-per-view’ movie catalogue.

Though it was originally planned to be premiered on the DTH platform on January 10, a day ahead of the movie’s theatrical release, the actor and film maker had to yield to pressure from theatre owners, who protested the initiative, saying it will prove to be adverse to the theatre business in the long run.

Kamal Haasan moves Competition Commission on Vishwaroopam

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has moved fair trade regulator Competition Commission against some theatre associations for allegedly restricting the release of his film Vishwaroopam.

This is the second instance in less than three months after Ajay Devgn that an eminent film personality has lodged a complaint with the Competition Commission of India.

"We have received a complaint from Kamal Haasan (related to Vishwaroopam)," a senior CCI official said.

The complaint, filed this week, is against some theatre associations for allegedly restricting the release of the film, the official said.

Actor-director Haasan's production house Rajkamal Films International has moved the fair trade regulator.

"We are likely to take a call on the issue next week," the CCI official said.

A spokesperson for Kamal Haasan did not immediately respond to queries seeking comments on the issue.

Rajkamal Films had scheduled the release of the film first on DTH platform on January 10. In the wake of vehement opposition from various theatre associations, the DTH release was shelved and the movie would now hit the theatres first on January 25 in 500 screens across Tamil Nadu.

The industry has let me down,” said an emotional Kamal Haasan in Chennai after postponing the release - both theatrical and DTH - of his new and most ambitious film ever. Vishwaroopam, which was to be premiered on the DTH platform on January 11, a day prior to hitting the theatres, may now release on January 25 or later.

According to sources, the actor-filmmaker took the step when his move elicited a dismal response from DTH subscribers, besides stiff opposition from theatre owners across the country. Forget DTH, such is the plight of the actor, who was once hailed as one of the top stars in the country that the theatrical release date of the film too is under a cloud.

Though Kamal puts up a brave front, there are rumours that he was outnumbered and outwitted by the multiplex owners and had misread his audience completely. “Audiences down South will not shell out so much money for films, whether at home or in theatres. There were too few subscribers for the film across the country (Airtel was reportedly selling for Rs 1,000 per view), that pushing back the release date may not change the mindset of the audience,” said a source.

Vishwaroopam’ DTH release on February 2: Kamal


Film-maker and actor Kamal Haasan has officially announced that his big budget blockbuster Vishwaroopam will be released on direct-to-home (DTH) platform on February 2, a week after its theatre release in Tamil and Telugu.

The Hindi version of the film Vishwaroop will hit the theatres in North India on February 1 and the DTH release will be on February 2.

Issuing a press release on Monday, on behalf on his production house Raajkamal Films International, the film-maker apologised to the “patient yet eager audience” who were waiting to watch the film on DTH.

Mr Haasan also said he was working with his DTH partners to reduce the pricing of the show for video-on-demand and also contemplating three shows on February 2 to make it convenient for those who book the movie.

There were severe protests that any movie should not be released in other media, before it hits the big screen. Now the Director General of fair trade regulators is probing the case and the results are expected to come out by the end of this month.
