MUMBAI: An amendment bill making offences under the Indian Penal Code's Section 498A compoundable with court permission will be introduced in the next Parliament session.The section deals with offences of dowry demand and cruelty by husband and in-laws.

TOI had reported on March 22 that the NDA government is working on the proposal to make the section compoundable. This means that the law, if amended, would have the provision of settlement between the warring couple if the court allows it.

Under the section, a man and his relatives can face imprisonment for up to three years as well as fine.

Yes, now a days its widely used wrongly. Women have started threatening in-laws with this stupid law even.

Nirbhaya also will face same path soon.I think there is no need of these kind of laws.What we have those are enough but only problem is they are are implementing properly.Rich people are escaping and poor people are getting suffer.If these kind of laws will come innocent people more suffer.

498 is most dreaded section.....Govt couldn't amend fearing feminists.....I think govt was preparing ground from last 2 years for the change. Better to have some amendment if woman found misusing the law.....

Too many laws are created in last few years because Govt. was not capable enough to do anything.

And because of these complicated laws justice were found nowhere.

Not families of women, I was talking about families of man.

Usually what happens is when an lady has extra marital affair, she started threatening his husband with these laws. Now section 498A allows arrest and detention of husbands parents as well. So husband is forced to either agree sharing his bed with wife lover or watch his family being harassed.

If parents are excluded under this section I think the husband can gather some courage to fight for the truth.
