In Phases III and IV of digital addressable system (DAS), domestic set-top box (STB) manufacturers will find demand coming in from independent multi-system operators (MSOs) and direct-to-home (DTH) service providers. The sale of locally manufactured STBs is projected to witness a 15 per cent growth in Phase IV of DAS, which primarily covers rural areas, according to a new research report from Dataxis. Titled ‘The STB Market in SAARC countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka)’, the report states that domestic STBs accounted for 5 per cent of the total STBs seeded in Phases I and II of DAS areas. The indigenous STBs are showing steady growth in DAS Phase III. The Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative is already finding support from Videocon d2h and Airtel Digital TV. In the ninth Task Force meeting last month, DTH Operators Association of India president and Videocon d2h CEO Anil Khera said that they had procured about three million STBs from Videocon. Recently, Airtel Digital TV announced that it would procure indigenous STBs from Hero Group-owned manufacturer Mybox Technologies. Recently acquired by the Hero Group, Mybox would be manufacturing 100,000-150,000 STBs per month for Airtel Digital TV.
