next couple of years I highly doubt we will have 200 HD channels ... At the most in 2 years add another 15-20 new HD channels ....

HD will render SD obsolete just as Colour tv rendered B&W... all channels will be HD in future with STBs down converting to any odd SD tv set out there. Remember that famous song: DABBA HAI DABBA UNCLE KA TV DABBA

Anyways, surprised to know that Tata Sky (who used to keep complaining about capacity/bandwidth) has now almost half a dozen spare transponders NOT being utilized.

One transponder (considering DVB-S2 and 8PSK) gives 66 Mbps to 86 Mbps depending upon the FEC code.

Though the exact bitrate for each channel may not be disclosed, it is believed to be:
less than 7 Mbps for a HD channel
less than 2 Mbps for a SD channel

In the near future, IPTV may surpass Cable & DTH as the leading TV content distribution method. Eventually, later, Internet Television may succeed even IPTV and every TV channel in the world will be streamed over the Internet (not broadcast).

Who knows - drones may replace satellites and even cell phone towers.

The new codec HEVC already used in UHD 4K Tata Sky STB promises a 62% bitrate reduction for HD video - would be possible to squeeze HD content within 3 Mbps and SD content within 1 Mbps.

TV channels may not remain dependent on DTH/Cable providers
