Neo Sports Broadcast, the company that owns and operates Neo Sports and Neo Prime, has moved the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) against DTH operator Tata Sky for switching off the channel from its platform and imposing unreasonable terms.
The agreement between Tata Sky and Neo Sports ended in September following which the two parties began negotiating on a new deal. As the negotiations failed, Tata Sky issued a public notice stating that Neo Sports and Neo Prime would cease to be carried on the platform beginning 12 October.
Consequent to Tata Sky’s decision to switch off the two channels, Neo Sports Broadcast moved the TDSAT on 10 October seeking restoration of the basic position wherein Tata Sky starts carrying Neo Sports and Neo Prime. The matter is expected to come up for hearing in the first week of December.
According to a Neo official, Tata Sky was paying Rs. 15 million per month as subscription fee for carrying the channels. However, when the deal came up for renewal, the DTH operator was willing to pay only Rs. 5 million per month as opposed to the Rs. 15 million it was shelling out earlier.
The official further added that when Tata Sky refused to do a fixed-fee deal, Neo offered to enter into a Reference Interconnect Offer (RIO) arrangement, which was also not acceptable to the DTH operator. Left with no other option, Neo moved TDSAT seeking reinstatement of its channels.
