MUMBAI: Even though 4K television is yet to take off in India, leading direct-to-home (DTH) service provider "Tata Sky" has entered into an agreement with "Technicolor" for volume supplies of 4K set-top boxes (STBs) to be delivered by early 2015.

Technicolor announces 4K Set Top Box deal with Tata Sky - Technicolor

Technicolor demonstrates industry’s first “High-Frame-Rate” 4K/UHD set top box at the 2014 Cable Show - Technicolor

This is the first time that 4K STBs are being shipped in volume by Technicolor, the company said.

Tata Sky’s strategic relationship with Technicolor dates back to 2005, and the agreement is reflective of a Technicolor 4K roadmap of solid technical innovation, including 4K trials, which has gone on around the globe.

“4K is an important milestone in Tata Sky’s product portfolio, and we are confident of the timing and quality of delivery because of our partnership with Technicolor,” said Tata Sky MD and CEO Harit Nagpal. Nagpal said it was too early to talk about pricing and launch of the 4K STBs. He also did not specify how many STBs the DTH operator had ordered.

Technicolor is gearing up to deliver the most immersive 4K experience on the market. The company is building on its compression and colour science to deliver an augmented content experience capable of delivering Hollywood-grade picture quality to viewers.

“Technicolor once again leads the market in landing the first high-volume deal to deliver 4K set-top boxes to consumers. This deal further solidifies our leadership in the 4K marketplace,” said Technicolor president of Connected Home Michel Rahier.
“With the promise of an unparalleled immersive viewing experience and the predicted rapid growth of the 4K market, this agreement is a valuable strategic business opportunity for Technicolor and our long-term partner Tata Sky,” Rahier added.

Too over ambitious project. 4k is too futuristic. And in India where people even don't know difference between SD and HD it take Y3k to implement fully

Im in agreement .. 4k will take atleast 3 more years to catch up .. I dont think any 4k TV is less than 1.5 lac atm and no average Indian can afford to spend so much .. 4K Tv rates have to come down to 50k sorts before people start seriously considering it ..
