Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said that the Centre was contemplating extending healthcare under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation solely in government hospitals. The employees enjoying ESI facility were so far more dependent for treatment in private hospitals as they did not trust government hospitals.
He also said that Centre was in favour of a concerted and joint effort with the State Government in raising the level of healthcare, with particular reference to help the unorganised sector with access to hospitals. He also said that as a beginning, construction workers, numbering an estimated 4.7 crore across the State, were now getting access to quality healthcare at Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospitals. They would be followed by autorickshaw drivers and rickshaw-pullers, and workers under different government schemes, including Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers and those working in the mid-day meal programme, he said.
He was interacting with presspersons after an exhaustive meeting with Telangana Health Minister C. Laxma Reddy and senior officials, including the Director of Medical Education and Directors and Superintendents of hospitals like Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Osmania General Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, MNJ Cancer Hospital, and others. He said there was a proposal to start separate ESIC blocks in all major State-run hospitals across Telangana. He was responding to a request by Mr. Laxma Reddy to offer ESI services in government hospitals as it would translate into revenues, too.
