In 2012, many big star movies failed to make an impact at overseas box-office although films like Pawan Kalyan starrer Gabbar Singh made huge money. Gabbar Singh and Eega were the biggest hits in the overseas market. Although both these films collected money more than Rs 7 Crores, we are presenting the figures that gave profits/loss to the distributors and exhibitors, to understand the business of overseas in more right perspective. The overall figure of a particular movie may seem big on paper, but that hardly tells the real picture. So this table would show which really brought smiles to the main distributor and exhibitors.
Observations..
Success rate for Telugu films is high in India this year. But same is not true for the USA market. Many big hero films failed to make money. On the other hand, market is growing slowly. But it needs to be tapped with realistic approach.
The positive aspect of 2012 is that if a movie got good word of mouth and reviews, audiences flocked to the theaters rather then waiting for the pirated versions to hit the web. At the same time if the movie had not received encouraging reviews they completely ignored the movie.
The number of centers have increased in USA now and many films released in USA much before they got screened in USA and this helped films to get great openings. High ticket prices continued to be the main problem for many moviegoers.
As usual there is no unity among the distributors in USA like in India. And they keep increasing the rates to buy the movie without assessing the film's content/quality, which backfires most of the time leaving them in lurch.
