The process of granting TV channel licences is yet to gather pace as 260 applications are pending with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), Minister of State in the MIB Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said in the Lok Sabha. “As on date, 260 applications are pending with the government for grant of permission to operate TV channels,” Rathore said in response to a question. He also said that the government maintains only cumulative dates as grant of permission is a continuous process. To date, the ministry has permitted 830 TV channels out of which 398 channels are under news & current affairs category and 432 channels are under non-news & current affairs category.
