Cable operators dismissed the state government's claim that close to 90 % television connections in Mumbai had been digitized . They said the actual figure is around 70%.

President of Cable Operators' Association Anil Parab said if the government stopped analog signals to the TVs of the remaining 30 % homes in the city from November 1, there would be no channels to watch, which may lead to widespread anger on the streets , especially against the operators .

Over 3,000 cable operators led by Parab reviewed TV digitization at a meeting on Sunday with only three days to go for a 'blackout' of analog signals by the Centre in four metros of the country, including Mumbai . "Who will take the responsibility of attacks on operators ? Because of poor awareness about digitization among the low-income group ,the confusion over share of operators and consumers in the paid channels , and the shortage of Set-Top Boxes (STBs ), the switch over has been delayed ,"he said .

Parab demanded that the date of 'blackout' fixed for analog signals on the midnight of October 31 st should be extended till midnight of December 31 so that in the new year only digital signals are allowed in the metro. "By that time we hope to achieve digitization as cable operators are not opposed to it," he said.

Abhay Dudhale of Maharashtra Navnirman Cable Sena and Jagdish Joshi of Eastern Cable Operators Welfare Association demanded more time to bring transparency in revenue sharing and to achieve total digitization. In the analog system the cable is directly attached to the TV to get you 100 channels at Rs 150 to 200 per month but without any interactive system .However ,in a digitized system there are two types - direct to home (DTH) and Digital Access System (DAS ).

Mumbai cable operators unite to press for 2-month extension

Even as television went blank on analogue cable, a last-ditch effort was made by cable operators in Mumbai to push digitization behind by two months so that they could place set-top boxes (STBs) in consumer homes.

Fear of losing customers to direct-to-home (DTH) service providers due to switching off of signals to analogue cable homes across the city brought hundreds of cable operators together under one roof.

The meeting was called by Mumbai Cable Operators Association (MCOA) headed by Shiv Sena Member of Legislative Council Anil Parab to protest against the Union Government's tough stance of not extending the sunset date for first phase of digitization.

Desperate for more time, the MCOA is also planning to move Supreme Court hoping to get some relief from the apex court. The cable operators had to face disappointment on Wednesday as the Bombay High Court refused to extend the digitisation deadline by pointing out that the operators were given time in June to seed the set-top boxes (STBs).

MCOA president Parab demanded that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) should give at least two months time to cable operators to seed the boxes. He also said that the government's decision to switch off signals to analogue homes has resulted in 600,000 black homes.

Mumbai cable operators to move Supreme Court

The Mumbai Cable Operators Association (MCOA) will move the Supreme Court with its plea to extend the cable television digitisation deadline to Dec 31, an official said here Friday.

Hundreds of cable operators Friday protested outside the collector's office pressing for their demand to extend the deadline. The Bombay High Court had Wednesday rejected the petition filed by two cable operators for the extension of the deadline.

Head of MCOA and Shiv Sena legislator Anil Parab said: "Broadcasters have switched off signals due to which six lakh homes have gone black," he said adding that most of them cannot afford the Set Top Boxes (STB) at this point.

On Thursday, the first day of the central-government mandated switch-over from the earlier analogue signal system, Shiv Sena-backed cable operators in Mumbai continued to be defiant vis-a-vis the digitisation.
