Reliance Jio
PRESENCE: All India
STATUS: Possible launch in December
STRATEGY: The company said it will offer aggressive data plans — Rs 300 to Rs 500 a month, or half or less than half of the going market rate, and bundled with devices to support 4G technology. Problem is it has no 3G network to fall back on. It may run some 2G services in a few circles.
Bharti Airtel
PRESENCE: 11 telecom zones
STATUS: Has started 4G services in 296 towns. Its services are now available in Bengaluru, Pune, Nasik, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mangaluru, Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Kapurthala, Moga, Bathinda and Patiala, among others. Further, 4G trials have been launched for existing Airtelcustomers in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Mumbai.
STRATEGY: The company has proposed 4G at 3G price plans, but the uptake has been slow. The device adoption for ones that operate in the airwave band still remains low. It is now pushing its corporate sales staff and a few dedicated sales staff to promote adoption of 4G, but the focus remains on 2G and 3G.
Vodafone India
PRESENCE: Five telecom zones
STATUS: It is selectively testing in a couple of these zones where it has sufficient airwaves.
STRATEGY: The company is still betting on 3G first, for which it has bigger expansion plans.
Reliance Communications
PRESENCE: 20 telecom zones
STATUS: It will selectively launch 4G services across the country starting with Gujarat in November.
STRATEGY: But would need to spend Rs 7,000 crore on liberalization of spectrum that it holds since 2001, the first step towards launching 4G. It will be priced in tandem with prevailing market rates.
