Review 8PSK Modulation screwsup viewing

Recently, TataSky upgraded their transponders to facilitate 8PSK modulation from the earlier Quad PSK. 8PSK is an updated method. This will enable TataSky to transmit much more bandwidth in the same transponders. From say 36MBps earlier, Now I believe they transmit upto 50MBps. This is the reason why they are now squeezing 13 HD channels in a single transponders.

However, there is a major downside to this. The higher modulation leaves little room for error correction. Therefore, the transmission has to be perfect and with clear line-of-sight and signal strength. To get higher quality signal, The new modulation method may require higher size of the dish. But, TataSky is having old small dish only of 90 cm dia.

Since the addtion of StarWorld Premiere HD, I am noticing significant deterioration in the signal quality. Last one week, It is raining intermittendly but never heavily. However, the new method is not able to bear even normal rains. I live at Navimumbai on the coast with no problem of access or site. I am still to find a single program of 15 or 20 minutes also without signal problem. Pictures freeze, pixels scramble and signal breaks. It happens so often that it becomes unbearable to watch a single program.

So, the bottom line is that I can't watch TataSky for four months in a year of the monsoon season - June to September. The HD as well as TamilGEC genre both are in 8PSK. It is becoming more and more painful to watch TV thus. I have never faced the problem so acutely earlier, even in earlier bigger rains. lAnat on TataSky
