Disney’s ‘ABCD 2’ tops 1st weekend collection in 2015 with Rs 45.7 cr
Within a month of ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ claiming to be the strongest box-office opener of 2015, director-choreographer Remo D’Souza’s ‘ABCD 2’ has managed to usurp that title. Produced by Disney India, ‘ABCD 2’ has seen the biggest opening at the domestic box office this year so far, with a net collection of Rs 45.71 crore (Rs 457.1 million). ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ had collected Rs 38.15 crore (Rs 381.5 million) in its first weekend, while Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ ‘Gabbar Is Back’ had netted Rs 37.03 crore (Rs 370.3 million) and Rs 36.88 crore (Rs 368.8 million) respectively. ‘ABCD2’ was released in India across 2,000 screens on 19 June with over 500 screens in 3D. Despite a weak storyline, the film got thumbs up from viewers as well as critics for its dancing acts. It opened on Friday with a net collection of Rs 14.15 crore (Rs 141.5 million), which slightly increased to Rs 14.32 crore (Rs 143.2 million) on Saturday. However, on Sunday, the net collection jumped to Rs 17.24 crore (Rs 172.4 million), making it the biggest opener of the year. The film stars Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor in lead roles with Prabhudeva and Lauren Gottlieb in important roles.
