Airtel Digital TV, the DTH arm of Bharti Airtel, has introduced a new interactive value added service called iEnglish, which intends to help customers to improve their English speaking skills by offering language tutorials.

Airtel states that these tutorials will be in an audio-visual format and will feature animated characters and quizzes. The service is priced at Rs 30/month.

What’s worth noting here is that the service is powered by Hungama and Aptech, which had earlier partnered with each other, last month to launch mEducation offerings. Airtel said that iEnglish will offer lessons on correct pronunciations of words and proper grammar usage, and help users learn new words and phrases including the commonly used English phrases for day-to-day communication.

Other services: DTH operator Tata Sky also offers a similar service, Active English, with content being offered by the British Council. In March 2012, Airtel had launched an interactive test preparation service on TV called iExam, which offered coaching modules, mock and practice tests to students preparing for competitive exams. The company had partnered with several coaching centres across the country for this initiative and the service offered engineering test content for AIEEE, IIT and various state level entrance exams through various packages starting at Rs 49/week. Airtel had stated that it plans to add exam content for CAT, Bank PO, and PMT examinations by tying up with suitable partners in the near future.

Prior to this, Airtel had partnered with NDTV Good Times and Shemaroo Entertainment in April 2011, to launch two interactive services on TV called iDarshan and iGoodlife. Other interactive services available on Airtel DTH include iKidsworld, iAstro, iRadio and iFasal. Launched in April 2008, Airtel digital TV claims to have over 7.2 million customers
