In a major operation the Andhra Pradesh Police on Tuesday claimed to have killed 20 red sandalwood smugglers in an encounter inside the forests near Tirupati in Chittoor district of the state.

Police officials said that a joint operation against the smugglers was launched with the help of forest officials in Seshachalam forest near Tirupati. The encounter started after the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) and forest officials spotted the alleged smugglers inside the forest area.

Andhra Pradesh Police officials say about 100 red sandalwood smugglers were intercepted by the joint team. The smugglers attacked the RSASTF and forest officials with stones and axes following which the security agencies opened fire killing at least 20 smugglers

I think the story will be different altogether, but one thing for sure, the truth is suppressed. Madras HC has ordered not to cremate these bodies till further notice.

TN CM in a letter to his AP counterpart said that he was distressed to hear the news of the death of poor 'smugglers'.

If so called poor 'smugglers' went to AP for illegal activities then police have right to arrest & prosecute them.
If smugglers are attacking police then police have right to kill them...

According to news smugglers attacked police using axes & police retaliated. If this is true then smugglers should have surrendered instead of attacking....

Its difficult to understand the story, why AP police killed smugglers instead of arresting...So if this is true then let NHRC help investigate.

But thing to remember is that these people are well organised gang may be associated with international gang & naxalites....& not just 'poor smugglers'....
