In April 2015, the Advertising Standards Council of India’s (ASCI) Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) upheld complaints against 114 out of 144 advertisements. The ad watchdog has pulled up three television channels for misleading advertisements that claimed they were the No. 1 in the space they operate in.
The CCC pulled up Zee Media Corporation Ltd for claiming that Zee Business was ‘India’s No. 1 Business News Channel’. This claim quoting TAM source violated the TAM Guidelines. The regulator observed that the period of comparison was too short and gave the advertiser an artificial advantage.
Multi Screen Media Pvt Ltd’s sports channel Sony Six was also under fire for claiming in an advertisement that ‘Sony Network is the second biggest contributor to the sports genre with 33.6 per cent share’, which was stated to be ambiguous and misleading. The advertisement quoted TAM figures without following TAM rules and the graphical representation was also misleading.
