For the first time ever in its history, the Asia cup will be played in a T20 format.
But Afghanistan, who are ranked above Bangladesh in T20 rankings, were denied direct entry into the tournament alongwith India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka!
They caught everyone’s eyes after they defeated
Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2014.
And in the past year, they played two ODI and
two T20 series against Zimbabwe, who are a test playing nation, and won each of them.
Granted Zimbabwe are perhaps the weakest test playing nation, but they are still a test playing nation. But still, Afghanistan were made to play the qualifiers where they were edged out by UAE who won all 3 of their qualifier matches and deserve a place in the main tournament.
As a cricket fan, I feel sad for the Afghanistan cricket team who will not take part in the Asia cup 2016.
I think the ICC should take the associate nations more seriously now.
