Brave may be the new browser that haters of intrusive online ads have been looking for — it claims to block ads, block third-party trackers and speed up browsing.
One big caveat, though: After removing third-party ads, Brave puts in its own advertising.
The new browser is the work of Brendan Eich, the former CEO and co-founder of Mozilla and creator of JavaScript, who stepped out of his position at Mozilla in 2014 after criticism forsupporting the ban on gay marriage. Brave Software is his new venture, and the goal is to keep away "bad" ads that invade privacy and slow down your browser, replacing them with "clean" ads.
In Eich's statement, he says Brave will insert new ads based on its own tracking of users' browsing data. However, he also says it's not as intrusive as third-party trackers. Instead of tying the data to a specific user, it's used to select ads anonymously and isn't stored by Brave, Eich explains.
"We will target ads based on browser-side intent signals phrased in a standard vocabulary, and without a persistent user ID or highly re-identifiable cookie," he writes.
'Brave' browser promises up to 60% faster speed by blocking ads
