The Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved building of the GSAT-17 and -18 communication satellites.

Building the GSAT-18 is part of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) efforts to support services of existing users.

Weighing about 3,425 Kg, the GSAT-18 spacecraft project will require a total budget of Rs 1,022 crore (Rs 10.22 billion) including launch services.

It will have 24 normal C-band transponders, 12 upper extended C-band transponders, 12 Ku-band transponders, and two Ku-Beacon transmitters. The satellite’s orbit location is 74°E in Geo.

Ku-band transponders are used by direct-to-home (DTH) operators to provide TV services.

GSAT-17 (93.5 E) will have 24 normal C-band transponders, two lower extended C-band transponders, 12 upper extended C-band transponders, 2+2 MSS (forward & return link) transponders, and one DRT and SAS&R transponder.

The satellite will cover the Indian mainland as well as the islands of Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep in C- and Ku-band.

All heritage-proven bus systems will be used to build the satellite in 30 months, the Cabinet said in a press statement. The satellite structure will be similar to the GSAT-10, it added.

The GSAT-18 spacecraft will provide replacement capacity supporting the existing television, telecommunication, Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG), and VSAT services in the country. Moreover, the GSAT-18 spacecraft will augment and support the existing telecommunication, television, DSNG, and VSAT services in the country, thus benefiting all sections of society.

The Cabinet has also green-lighted building of the GSAT-17 communication satellite, weighing about 3,425 Kg, for providing replacement capacity and in-orbit backup.

The GSAT-17 spacecraft project, including launch services, will require a total budget of Rs 1,013.20 crore (Rs 10.13 billion). All heritage-proven bus systems will be used to build the satellite in a period of 30 months.

The satellite structure will be similar to the GSAT-10. The GSAT-17 will provide replacement capacity in different frequency bands and protect operational services.

I don't think GSAT 15 will used for DTH, since DD not able to sell slots of 5 Ku Band TPs then what they will do with 24 Ku Band rest regarding dishtv SES 10 is already fixed to replace NSS 6.

Cann't Isro add more TPs per sat instead of using heritage design which would be be more cost effective......as sat will be launched 30 months later....

But I think Isro doesn't have capacity to launh these type of sat....They can launch only micro experimental sats....
So if Arian Space is going to launch sat, then atleast Isro should make heavy sat...or perhaps Isro don't have tech to build heavy sat....
