With digitization of cable TV in full swing, DTH companies offering convenient alternatives to bypass errant cable operators in Salt Lake and adjoining areas are fast reaching new heights.
Around 60 percent digitization of the area has already been completed. It will take another two years for complete digitization.
BUSINESS UP
With a flourishing residential and corporate presence in Salt Lake and the neighboring areas, cable operators and DTH distributors are now busy supplying set top boxes to their clients, who are in a hurry to go digital. Business of set top boxes has gone up by around 25 percent to 50 percent since June this year, when the government's mandate was announced.
Presence of more than 40 cable operators in Salt Lake has speeded up the process of digitization. Though digitization does not promise any immediate profits for local cable operators, many of them are hopeful that they would be rewarded in long run.
A WAIT FOR CABLE OPERATORS
As per the regulation of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), local cable operators would initially get a share of just Rs 45 out of every Rs 100 that the subscriber will pay for the basic service of 100 free-to-air TV channels.
DTH'S GAIN
DTH dealers, however, are happy with the increase in their revenues. There is no initial setback for them. Though, they are facing stiff competition from these operators, profits are nevertheless flowing in with the demand having gone up by almost 20 percent.
Dealing in Tata Sky connections for the past five years, Rajni Dalmiya, owner of Impressions is earning three percent more from monthly recharges and 10 percent more from selling set top boxes. It costs a client between Rs 1,700 and Rs 5,100 to buy a box, depending on the quality. Impressions that also deals in computer hardware, computer services and repair, advertising, computer peripherals and accessories earns close to Rs 3 lakh a year from Tata Sky dealership.
"We are planning to get dealerships of all the other reputed DTH service providers so that customers can choose from an array of options," said Dalmiya.
