Chittoor mayor Katari Anuradha was murdered and her husband Mohan critically injured when five men attacked them with pistols and daggers around noon at the town municipal office.
NDTV, quoting reports, said the couple were in Anuradha’s chamber when the men who wore burqas barged in and attacked them. Mohan, a Telugu Desam Party leader, is fighting for his life in a city hospital.
The couple’s enmity with a rival group is believed to be the reason behind the attack. Reports in Telugu media said three persons had surrendered before the police for the crime.
Andhra Pradesh has a history of political violence with rival families and groups killing each other in feuds that last for generations. In 2005, TDP legislator Paritala Ravindra was murdered by his rivals outside his party office in Anantapur town.
Andhra Pradesh split and Telangana was formed of it in 2014.
