CNN-IBN, the English news television channel of Network18 may soon lose its prefix. The 10-year brand licensing agreement between the Indian company and Turner Broadcasting’s CNN, which is set to expire in January, will not be renewed.

Zee Group is in talks with the US broadcaster for a tie-up to launch an English news channel, according to two people familiar with the development.

Currently, Network18’s brand licensing accord with CNN, allows the Indian TV channel to pick reports from CNN’s extensive global news network. However, Turner Broadcasting does not own equity in the Indian company.

The initial branding deal was signed between CNN Turner International and TV18 group company Global Broadcast News (GBN), which was then headed by journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. Later, GBN became IBN18 Broadcast Ltd and then TV18 Broadcast Ltd, which currently operates CNN-IBN, the Hindi news channel IBN7 and the Marathi news channel IBN Lokmat. CNN-IBN was launched in December 2005.

“It is not a break-up. Both the companies may mutually agree not to renew the brand licensing agreement. It is coming up for renewal only in January 2016,” said one of the two people cited above. “CNN has had a successful 10-year run with the Network18 group for its English news channel. There is no misunderstanding either.”

Meanwhile, a CNN team visited the Zee News facilities in Noida recently, sparking speculation that the two news broadcasting companies are in talks.

It is not clear if Zee and CNN are looking only at a branding tie-up or are exploring a deeper partnership involving equity. The talks between the two companies come at a time when the Indian government is examining the possibility of raising the cap on foreign direct investment in news media from 26% to 49%.

Mukesh Ambani-controlled TV18 Broadcast and Turner International’s CNN have decided not to renew their brand licensing agreement, ending their 10-year association that established CNN-IBN as a popular English news channel. The news services arrangement for use of the CNN brand and CNN news content also reach their end, both companies said on Monday. TV18 Broadcast’s deal with CNN concludes in January 2016. English news channel CNN-IBN will, thus, have the brand name CNN dropped. It is not clear yet whether TV18 Broadcast will continue with the IBN brand or replace it with another name. CNN has initiated talks with Subhash Chandra-controlled Zee Media Corporation Ltd (ZMCL), which runs a clutch of Hindi and regional news channels. Chandra has been toying with the idea of launching English-language news channels, both in the general and in the business news space.

CNN already having long time partnership with ZEE but interesting to see how ZEE actually going to work under this partnership as they won't allow CNN to control the channel entirely.

This may be pressure tactic by CNN....as they have close relations with TV18 group & already have formed human capital asset to secure their interests....So it will be difficult for them to structure the same in new company with Zee & also time consuming.....

They definitely would like to become #1 player which would be easier within current setup....

So either they want to raise their stake or want full editorial control in new setup......Also it seems Ambani factor will play imp role.....

So Ambani will definitely not want a Anti Modi thing same with Shubhash Chandra then how CNN will go forward ?

But CNN is anti-Modi....I thought its pro.....
I don't know what their biggie's think but they suddenly don't want other Countries leader to be grow.

Fareed Zakaria's may not create controversy which they likely to be.

So if Zee able to forge alliance with CNN then we may see poaching of people like Sardesai or even Zakaria may also be in the picture...
