Shami offered Grade B contract as corruption investigation ends

Mohammed Shami has been handed a Grade B annual contract by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after investigation by the Anti Corruption Unit (ACU) revealed no wrongdoing on the fast bowlers part with regards to breaches of the board's code. Shami's annual contract was withheld when the list of centrally-contracted players was revealed on March 10 owing to reports of domestic trouble.

It's premeditated cheating, it's disgraceful - Michael Clarke

A "shattered" Michael Clarke, former Australian captain, has slammed his successor Steve Smith and the senior players involved in plotting to change the condition of the ball in the third Test against South Africa.

An emotional Clarke said he was shocked over the revelations. "It's premeditated cheating. It's blatant cheating, it's disgraceful, it's not accepted by anyone," he told Channel Nine on Sunday (March 25). "And particularly in Australia, we have the best bowling attack in the world... wouldn't need to cheat to beat anybody."

Clarke said he sympathised with Smith and Bancroft, who fronted the media after the day's play. "Cameron Bancroft, it's his eighth Test match," he said. "I can't believe the leadership group has made a decision to do this. They've gone and got the young kid who's played his eighth Test match to do that.

"As a leader, you can't ask somebody to do something that you're not willing to do yourself," he added. "Steve Smith is such a lovely guy. You can see there that he's just shattered. I really feel shattered for him."

The 36-year-old declined to comment on whether Smith, who replaced Clarke as captain in late 2015, should be removed from the captaincy. "I don't think it is fair for me to answer that question right now. I'm too emotional, I'm just going on footage that I've seen," he said. "I haven't spoken to any players, I haven't spoken to the Australian captain. I think I would need to do a lot more groundwork before I could make that decision.

"But I can guarantee you that this is not a good look for the leadership group," he added.

Clarke also kept the doors open for a possible return to international cricket if requested, even though the possibility appears dim considering he turns 37 shortly. "If I was asked by the right people, then I would think about my answer," he said.

He believed Australian cricket had a systemic hierarchical problem with less power granted to the captain in recent years. "This has always been my gripe with Australian cricket in the last, let's say four or five years," he said. "I think our structure has changed. When I grew up watching cricket, the captain was in charge of the Australian cricket team, always... Mark Taylor's team, Allan Border's team, Steve Waugh's team.

"Halfway through my captaincy, this changed," he added. "(CA) brought in a head coach, a high performance manager, so then you've got the Board, CEO, high performance manager, head coach, chairman of selectors and (then the) captain. So that blurs accountability."

ZC removes Cremer as captain, sacks Streak and Co. | Cricbuzz.com
Zimbabwe Cricket have reacted to the team's failure to qualify for the World Cup with a widespread purge, removing captain Graeme Cremer and sacking Heath Streak and his entire coaching staff after they refused to resign.

While Cremer was informed of the board's decision on Thursday (March 29), Streak and his backroom team were given an ultimatum. In a brief email sent to Streak by Faisal Hasnain on Thursday evening, a copy of which has been seen by Cricbuzz, ZC's managing director wrote: "Further to our discussions, please give your technical staff (and yourself included) until 3pm tomorrow to formally resign. After which time the technical team can consider themselves dismissed and relieved of their duties with immediate effect."

Feeling that resigning would be tantamount to admitting culpability for Zimbabwe's failure to qualify for the World Cup, the coaching staff refused, believing that they were not to blame. After the deadline passed, it was confirmed that ZC had sacked the coaches, who included batting coach Lance Klusener, bowling coach Douglas Hondo, fielding coach Walter Chawaguta, team analyst Stanley Chiwoza and fitness coach Sean Bell. It is thought that Tatenda Taibu's position as chairman of selectors has also been ended, but neither Taibu nor ZC were available for comment.

"For everything I have given Zimbabwe Cricket as a former player and a coach, to be given an email with no full explanation or even the courtesy of a hearing is something I didn't expect," said Streak. "I understand that every coach's tenure will come to an end but we should at least have been given the chance to give our comments and ask some questions. I was looking to take the team to the T20 WC in 2020."
