Kagiso Rabada suspended for second Test against England

South Africa will be without Kagiso Rabada for the second Test against England at Trent Bridge next week after the fast bowler notched up a fourth demerit point on the ICC's code of conduct.

Rabada already had three demerit points for his part in a spat with Sri Lanka's Niroshan Dickwella during a one-day international earlier this year, and picked up a fourth point for "using inappropriate language" after his dismissal of Ben Stokes on the opening day of the first Test at Lord's.

According to the ICC, Rabada was found guilty of breaching article 2.1.7 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an International Match."

"As Rabada had received a 50 per cent fine and three demerit points in the fourth One-Day International against Sri Lanka in Cape Town on 8 February 2017, with the addition of this one demerit point, he has reached the threshold of four demerit points, which, pursuant to article 7.6 of the Code, have now been converted into two suspension points," the ICC said in a statement.

Rabada is the second cricketer, after Niroshan Dickwella, to be suspended since the introduction of the demerits points system, which has been in effect from 22 September, 2016.

The demerit points remain on a player's disciplinary record for a period of 24 months. An accumulation of 4 to 7 demerit points correspond to 2 suspension points, 8 to 11 demerit points equate to 4 suspension points and 12 and above will leave a player with 6 suspension points. In the case of Rabada, who has 2 suspension points, it results in a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.

The four demerit points will remain on Rabada's record and if he reaches the next threshold of 8 to 11, it would result in 4 suspension points, which equate to a ban from one Test and two ODIs or two T20Is, two Tests or four ODIs or four T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.

The ICC's statement said that Rabada's use of inappropriate language was "audible over the stump microphones and also resulted in the batsman to turn before walking off the field."

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and S.Ravi, third umpire Simon Fry and fourth umpire Rob Bailey. Rabada admitted his wrongdoing and accepted the sanction proposed by Jeff Crowe, the match referee. As a result of that, there is no need for a formal hearing.
