Call it a cricket overdose or the Indian team playing abroad a lot. Viewership for the game has been steadily falling over the past few years. According to a report by The Economic Times, viewership for the bat and ball game has dropped by 40 per cent to a weekly 61 gross rating points (GRPs) in 2014 from 105 in 2008. This is according to TAM data sourced from various broadcasters. Of the three cricket formats, ODIs have been affected the most, seeing a drop of 20 per cent. Test matches fell by 17.5 per cent. By comparison, Twenty20 cricket was relatively intact with a drop of just one per cent. Viewership of the T20 leagues has dropped by 4.2 per cent between 2008 and 2014. India’s international matches fell by 16 per cent. Non-India international matches fell by 14 per cent.
