In a history of sorts, Punjab-born Satnam Singh Bhamara has been picked up by NBA franchise Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Draft, thereby becoming the first India born player to play in the US-based basketball league. The 19-year-old center has been touted as India’s Yao Ming. He hails from Balloke village in Punjab’s Barnala district. He stands tall at 7’2″ and weighs 290 pounds. The development can have major ramifications for NBA’s growth in India. The sight of an India-born player playing in the NBA can spur more interest about the league in the cricket crazy country.
