TWENTY-SEVEN Hindu families on Friday asked the district administration to buy their houses and shops in Babri Mandi area of Aligarh, saying they wanted to leave as they felt “threatened” and “unsafe”. They also put up “for sale” posters outside their houses.

“A group of people from a particular community met me on Friday afternoon and submitted affidavits urging the administration to buy their houses and shops. They are fearful… the administration is trying to do everything possible to stop them from moving out of the area,” said Additional District Magistrate Awadhesh Tiwari.

According to sources, there was a clash between the two communities in the area on Wednesday night, after a 19-year-old newly married Hindu woman was allegedly molested by four Muslim youths.

In her complaint to the police, the woman alleged that she and her husband were on their way home when the youths molested her and tried to drag her to a secluded lane. When the woman shouted for help, people of both communities gathered outside, leading to a clash. Some unidentified miscreants fired in the air while a few allegedly tried to attack the woman’s husband with a knife.

The police intervened, and the situation was brought under control.

An FIR was filed against the four youths — Nadeem, Suheil, Ismail and Danish — on charges of outraging modesty. While Nadeem was arrested today, the rest are absconding.

While extra police personnel have been deployed in the Muslim-dominated area, some Hindu groups and BJP leaders protested outside the police station and collectorate on Thursday, demanding the immediate arrest of all the accused and those who led the violence.

Threatening to organise massive protests if all those named in the FIR are not arrested in the next 24 hours, Aligarh Mayor and BJP leader Shakuntala Bharti said: “Our women cannot walk on the road. Only one accused, who surrendered, has been arrested. We will continue our protests till all the accused are arrested.”

“This is not the first time that this has happened… We are not safe here so it’s better to leave,” said Manish Varshaney, a resident.

Aligarh SSP Luv Kumar said the main accused had been arrested, while raids were on to nab the others. Police have also filed cross FIRs from both sides on various charges, including rioting and attempt to murder.
