The Karnataka government on Sunday sounded a high alert against bird flu (Avian Influenza) outbreak after about 23,000 chickens died in a poultry farm at Molkera village in Humnabad taluk of Bidar district.
Following the death of a few chicken in the farm belonging to one Ramesh Gupta last week, officials of the animal husbandry and health departments visited the farm, collected samples and sent them to National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal. The institute confirmed it as H5N1 (Avian Influenza) case. On Sunday , around 23,000 chickens died in the farm. "Immediately after receiving the report, we have asked the district administration to cull the entire 1.5 lakh birds in the affected poultry farm to ensure the outbreak doesn't spread," husbandry minister A Manju told reporters here.
