News Death sentence to Esther Anuhya murder convict

Chandrabhan Sanap, the man convicted on Tuesday for the rape and murder of a software engineer Esther Anuhya in January last year, has been sentenced to death by a Mumbai court today.

While awarding the sentence, special judge Vrushali Joshi said it was a rarest of rare case.


"The case falls under the category of the rarest of rare, hence the accused is awarded death sentence...he must be hanged by his neck till he is dead," said the judge pronouncing the verdict.

The decomposed body of Esther Anuhya, 23, an employee of Tata Consultancy Services or TCS, was found in Kanjurmarg, a Mumbai suburb, on January 16, 2014.

Sanap was arrested from Nashik on March 3 and was charged with raping and murdering Esther.

Esther, who worked in Mumbai, had arrived from her hometown Vijayawada at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Kurla early on the morning of January 5, after a Christmas break.

Sanap, pretending to be a taxi driver, offered to drive Esther to her hostel in south Mumbai. When they walked out of the station, Esther found there was no cab, but Sanap managed to convince her to accompany him on his motorcycle. Enroute, he stopped the bike on a service road on the Eastern Express Highway near Kanjurmarg on the excuse that he had run out of petrol.

Its really nice to know that Judge didn't entertained the defence lawyer logic and gave his apt punishment.

“In this case, only the maximum punishment will send the right message to society and also to like-minded persons. To show leniency or mercy in a case of such heinous crime and upon the accused, who has shown no repentance or remorse after exhibiting extreme depraved mentality, would be a travesty of justice. Hence, this court has to award death penalty to the accused.”

“When he saw a woman alone, he started planning commission of a rape. He committed the rape and murder, poured petrol on her body and tried to burn it and then abandoned the remains to be eaten by animals. The act was pre-planned… He raped a defenceless lady, the ultimate insult to womanhood, and then eliminated her,” the verdict observed.

“The question of safety of a working woman came into focus because of this incident. It created a dent in the belief that Mumbai is still a safe city for women. The fact that in LTT railway station, or any place in Mumbai, young girls are not secure or safe, but can be subjected to a most savage form of rape and murder, was shocking to one and all. It created a feeling of helplessness in parents, in women, in girls and in every section of society. It created a fear psychosis and left a scar on the social order and became a burning social issue. Social abhorrence and the national shock created by this incident was just parallel to the one evoked by the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi.”
