All those who didn't get a set top box post deadline during phaze 1 of Digitization had to face cable blackout. Since the government postponed the dates from June 30th to Oct 31st, I had my doubts whether digitization would be effective from 1st November. However I had to face blackout as warned by the government and thought to cover up a post on this topic as soon they will be moving to the phaze 2 of digitization covering 38 towns. You too should start looking out for a set top box if you are from tier 2 towns. It was a terrible experience. I was without TV for few days and cable operator had switched off his phone. There was nothing I could do.
I checked out reviews for the best DTH. It was a very easy process getting the entire set up done by the DTH service. They called within minutes of booking it online and I got the entire set up done within 48 hours. The picture quality and sound is far better than the cable tv providers. They provide 24*7 customer care which has 13 languages options.
Cable operators will just take money for installing your set top box later they are very irresponsible and unprofessional in acting upon issues. Also, the Cable operators provide low quality STB's. DTH service gives you flexible subscription facility where you can choose a pack with bouquet pricing or pay only for those channels that you select whereas in cable tv subscription rates may increase. In case your cable operator has been showing pirated movies and unlicensed TV channels, it may no longer be possible for him to do so. It is better to do proper research and then make an informed decision rather than making last minute decision and inviting trouble later. I'd suggest DTH over Cable TV for overall quality of hardware, picture quality, service. So don’t wait for the last moment and get a set top box immediately before the phaze 2 of Digitization is effective. Check whether the DTH provider has all the channels you require.
