Telecom regulator Trai has completed the consultation process on nation-wide free roaming and it will give its recommendations in the next 10-15 days.

"On national roaming, the consultation has been completed, the authority is in the process of formulating its final rules before it takes a decision in 10-15 days," Trai Chairman Rahul Khullar told PTI.

Industry sources said national roaming is proposed to be done through special tariff vouchers which is not exactly free, but it could bring roaming prices down as a first step.

National Telecom Policy, 2012 aims to abolish roaming charges and allow mobile phone subscribers to use the same number across the country without having to pay extra charges for services once they are outside their telecom circle.

Trai for special tariff vouchers to cut roaming rates

The telcom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is working on different options to do away with roaming charges. Trai on Thursday discussed the option of allowing mobile phone companies to issue special tariff vouchers (STV) to bring down roaming charges.

The proposal, which was discussed between the Trai chairman Rahul Khullar and chief executives of top telecom operators on Thursday, may also soothe the industry's opposition of doing away with roaming charges that account for between 6-10% of telcos' overall revenue.

"Regulator is taking into account the cost recovery of roaming since it's a premium service and what will be the impact on overall tariff if it is given free of charge," said a person privy to details of the meeting.
