Deccan Chronicle cries pillage against TOI
Leading national daily The Times of India (TOI) is embroiled in a print war again, this time with Deccan Chronicle (DC). The Hyderabad-based newspaper has accused TOI of allegedly stealing its classified advertisements and passing them off as its own.
DC alleges that between January 2013 and June 2013, nearly 1,000 classified ads, which first appeared in DC, also appeared in TOI. The newspaper has filed a criminal complaint against TOI in this regard.
A report in the DC states that The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) and readers have reacted with horror to the pillaging of Deccan Chronicle’s classified ads by the TOI. It states that many viewers even vented their anger on Twitter, Facebook and even wrote letters to the editor on the issue.
In a statement, IJU president S N Sinha, secretary-general Devulapalli Amar and Press Council of India member K Amarnath said,
“It was not surprising that the newspaper management which started the concept of ‘paid news’ and ‘private treaties’ by unethically mortgaging the news columns to the publicists to garner money, stooped to a new low by lifting the classified advertisements from its rival Deccan Chronicle to dupe its readers to believe that it was the front runner in that segment.”
