Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi backed Bollywood star Aamir Khan on Tuesday and accused the government of bullying, hours after the actor was attacked by the BJP for revealing his family contemplated moving abroad following a spate of communal incidents.

The war of words came a day after the popular artist joined a raging debate on rising intolerance, saying the spike in sectarian tensions sowed a sense of “insecurity and fear” in the society and even in his family – drawing sharp reactions from senior ministers.

“Instead of branding all those who question the Govt & Modiji - as unpatriotic, anti national or ‘motivated, the govt would do better to reach out to people to understand what’s disturbing them,” @OfficeofRG tweeted.

Bollywood star Aamir Khan on Monday said he was “alarmed” by the number of incidents and revealed that his wife Kiran Rao had even suggested leaving the country.

Khan supported the artists returning their awards, saying it was one of the ways for creative people to express their dissatisfaction or disappointment.

“As an individual, as part of this country as a citizen, we read in the papers what is happening, we see it on the news and certainly, I have been alarmed. I can’t deny. I have been alarmed by a number of incidents,” he said while speaking here at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards ceremony.

The actor said he also felt that a sense of insecurity and fear has been growing in the past six or eight months.
