Bengaluru might have been the favoured destination for hosting the auctions for the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the Karnataka capital hosting it for the last three editions, but that could change this year with the powers-that-be mooting the idea of shifting it to Mumbai this year.

A report on CricketNext carried the statement of a a senior official of an IPL franchise, who said on Friday that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering the move, as it could prove more convenient both logistically as well as financially for the organisers.

Stokes, Woakes and Morgan among players with highest base price

As many as 799 players have enrolled their names for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 auction that will take place in Bengaluru on February 20. England cricketers Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Eoin Morgan are among the seven players who have opted for the highest base price of Rs. 2 Crore, according to an ESPNCricinfo report.

India's Ishant Sharma, former Australia quick Mitchell Johnson, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews and Australia pacer Pat Cummins are the other players who have chosen to be placed in the highest bracket while Trent Boult, Brad Haddin, Nathan Lyon, Jonny Bairstow, Kyle Abbott and Jason Holder are the seven players who have been listed in the Rs. 1.5 Crore bracket.

The franchises have until this weekend to submit their choices following which the list will be trimmed. Among the 799 players in the initial list, 160 are capped players from countries barring Pakistan and Bangladesh. Among them also are 24 capped Indians who have their base prices at Rs. 30 Lakh, except Ishant.

This will be the final year of IPL before the teams overhaul their squads for the 2018 season. Considering this, the franchises may not splurge money like they had in the previous auctions.

The existing player contracts will expire after this season of the league and most players are expected to go under the hammer at a mega auction ahead of the 2018 season. The retention policy and the number of teams for the 2018 season - with Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals set to return after a two-year ban - are among the decisions yet to be taken by the IPL governing body.
