Journos Deserting Bankrupt News Channel

It has become a fashion for some overenthusiastic industrialists and businessmen these days to launch television news channels to boost up their personal ego and project their own image; but within a few months of launching the channels, they are realising that media ventures are not commercially viable unless they have the passion to run the channels and patience to wait for the break-even,
So, they tend to prune the expenditure incurred on the channels gradually and the first victims are journalists who toil day and night to get the TRP ratings for the channels.
Take for example, the recently launched Telugu television channel CVR News, launched by Kamma businessman C V Rao of Image Hospitals. The channel has not been doing well since its inception and within no time, the management has realised that it is not a profitable venture. Since he cannot close it down abruptly as it would bring down his image, Rao is said to be creating a situation for the journalists, especially those drawing bigger salaries, to quit on their own. Many journalists, including seniors like Sivaprasad and Zakeer, deserted the channel and many more are on the verge of quitting. And Rao is learnt to have decided to wind up Life Style and Movie-related programmes.
The reason for the high-rate of attrition from CVR News is the poor salary payment to the journalists. Even during the recruitment, the management is said to have wondered whether journalists should be paid salaries every month as they would anyway make money through blackmailing. Now, Rao reportedly asked why he should pay Rs 30,000 per month to journalists, when he is not paying even Rs 15,000 to the doctors working in his Image Hospitals. Upset with such comments, many journalists called it quits. In fact, the management reportedly distributed sweets to the staff when seniors like Sivaprasad and Zakeer left the channel. Though the staff members accepted the sweets, they only cursed the miserly attitude of the management. Sources say, if this kind of attitude continues, the channel is likely to be wound up within a year.
