Korea: Ultra HD broadcasting goes on air
Ultra-HDNext-generation Ultra-HD broadcasting has commenced in Korea. U-max, an Ultra-HD cable TV channel, recently went on the air and started broadcasting four hours of Ultra-HD programming five times per day, including documentaries, cartoons and live concerts.

“We started broadcasting in ultra HD for the first time worldwide, after a test run last July,” said Minister of Science, ICT & Future Planning Choi Mun-Kee at a ceremony at the International Convention Center Jeju on Jeju Island to mark the beginning of Ultra-HD broadcasts. “This will affect related areas, including electronics and equipment makers, as well as the content industry.”

U-max intends to secure 200 hours of ultra HD programmes this year and invest KRW 40 billion into obtaining more ultra HD content by 2016. It will also consider broadcasting major sporting events this year, such as the FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the Asian Games in Incheon, in Ultra-HD. The cable TV industry also plans to lay out an additional KRW 650 billion to build related infrastructure by 2017.

For now, the cable industry intends to provide Ultra-HD broadcasts and VoD services in a format that does not require set-top boxes, but it will start supplying set-top boxes to viewers in the latter half of this year. Viewers with Ultra-HD TVs equipped with built-in set-top boxes will be able to watch Ultra-HD TV programmes.

HD has started gaining popularity only as of now and still people are using SD connections for LED tvs in India. So i guess this technology would make another 10 years to reach out the masses.

Honestly speaking , I have a 23 inch Samsung LED with Videocon d2h's SD connection. My parents can't afford a 32 inch LED with HD connection. May be cause I am in Bihar. ;)
I don't see my parents getting an HD connection in next 5 years. And I am a student.

geekvishal, yes you are right. In big cities its more showoff and desire of luxury items than actually need for it. Of course some are tech and techno savvy. So they are Eagar to try out new things.

But as a typical middle class family, even my dad was not interested to go for LED eventhough his CRT tv has lost color and used to have color patches.

It was me and my brother who discarded their TV and bought new LED for them 2 years back.

Again my mother was not interested in watching HD channels to watch her serials and was happy with SD. But my brother was interested. So it again activated HD in my brother's connection and made Mom-dad connection as mirror.

So, I am sure in next couple of years when you are earning (if not now), you will too replace family tv with new LED like I and my brother did. :)
