At a time when various news channels are sinking in a sea of red, public broadcaster Lok Sabha TV (LSTV) has turned profitable. This is a free-to-air channel which is mainly known for airing proceedings of Lok Sabha live, apart from various discussion-based programmes.
The channel showed a total income of Rs 7.65 crore for full financial year of 2011-12. Its operative expense is around 7 crore. Chief Executive of Lok Sabha TV Rajiv Lal said, “The earnings are purely ad revenue. Our average advertisement rate is Rs 600/10 sec while other news channels and other public broadcaster get Rs 10,000 on an average for a 10 second spot.” Other news channels get advertisements from the private sector, while LSTV is not allowed to accept private sector advertising as a matter of policy. “However, I do not see any harm in getting advertisement from the private sector,” Lal added.
During the first three months (April-June) of the current fiscal, the channel earned a total of Rs 4.83 crore – a staggering 1,500 per cent increase in revenues over the same quarter of 2011-12. It aims to earn up to Rs 20 crore in this current fiscal year.
