Maggi-fire.jpg

There seems to be no end to the woes of Nestle India.

After being forced to withdraw Maggi instant noodles from the market when food regulators raised alarm about the product being unsafe for consumption, Nestle India has coughed up a whopping Rs 20 crore to Ambuja Cements for destroying it.

According to reports, at least 10,000 vehicles were used to bring the recalled products to 38 warehouses from 35 lakh outlets across the country.

Ambuja Cements will be burning the recalled packets of Maggi noodles at its cement plant in Chandrapur in Maharashtra.

Nestle India has tied up with five cement manufacturing units, where Maggi packets will be crushed and mixed, to be used as fuel to produce raw material for cement, media reports said.

While the spokesperson did not confirm the cost involved in burning Maggi, he said: "In addition to the value of stocks being destroyed there will be additional costs to take into account, for example bringing back stock from the market, transporting the stock to the destruction points and destruction cost etc."

Nestle India had to recall Maggi instant noodles worth Rs 320 crore after it was banned by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India because of presence of Lead and taste enhancer MonoSodium Glutamate (MSG) beyond permissible limits.

They shouldn't have destroyed it. Other poor countries would have happily ate it as its better to die with full stomach than a empty stomach.

But why to feed poison to poor when you are aware of the same. Then Nestlé will be sued for homicide. Hence it was wise to use Maggi as input by Ambuja.

One month after the ban of Maggi, instant noodles sales in India have crashed by over 90 per cent to just about Rs 30 crore from Rs 350 crore a month earlier, according to industry estimates.

With the key category facing an uncertain future, food processing industry players are worried that this could have an impact on their overall investment plans, while companies are now facing 'increased harassment from safety inspectors', according to a senior official of industry body Assocham.

"In the last one month the instant noodles category has suffered a massive drop in sales. Before the Maggi ban this category was around Rs 4,200 crore annually, which is about Rs 350 crore per month. There is a fear psychosis among consumers," the official said.

Last month central food safety regulator FSSAI had banned Nestle's Maggi saying it was "unsafe and hazardous" for consumption after finding excessive levels of lead and violation of labelling regulations on taste enhancer MonoSodium Glutamate (MSG). Nestle India had recalled Maggi from the markets.

In the aftermath of Maggi controversy, there has been "increased focus" on packaged food companies, the official said....
