Subiya Bharmal, 22, the only survivor of one of the country's worst criminal homicides, revealed on Friday that her murderous brother showed outward signs of normalcy to the world, but he was a different person in the family, often acting out with misplaced resentment.

In her first public account of the February 28 horror in Thane, she also told Mirror that her brother Hasnain Warekar, 35, had been sexually abusing their younger sister with mental health problems. The family learned about the abuse on February 6 — a development that unsettled Hasnain and was perhaps one factor in his baffling motive to slit the throats of 14 family members, including eight children, in his house.

"He used to make our sister do all kinds of sexual acts. I was the first to learn about his disgusting behaviour and I complained to our mother on February 6. I think he overheard our conversation," said Subiya, who survived the massacre by locking herself in a room in Hasnain's ground-plusone-storey home in Kasarvadavali, Thane. Hasnain murdered his parents, his wife, their two young daughters, his three sisters, and his six nieces and nephews before hanging himself while still holding the bloodstained butcher's knife.
