The Marathi music channel market, occupied only by 9X Jhakaas, will soon have a new player. Media Worldwide, which runs a clutch of music channels, is gearing up to launch Sangeet Marathi in the first week of September. Tailored as a pure-play music channel, Sangeet Marathi will not only air popular film songs but also have a mix of folk music, Natya Sangeet (theatre songs) and album-based songs. A free-to-air channel, Sangeet Marathi will compete against 9X Jhakaas in a genre that is pegged at Rs 25 crore (Rs 250 million). To go more mass, Adhikari Bros’ Maiboli, which launched as a Marathi music channel, has started airing Marathi movies as well. Zee Marathi and its sister channel Zee Talkies also play music content in certain programming bands during the day. Media Worldwide has roped in Deepak Dewoolkar, a known name in Marathi cinema, as the channel’s chief creative officer.
