The government is not going to extend the deadline for digital addressable system (DAS) in Phase III areas. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has issued letters to broadcasters directing them not to supply signals to all those multi-system operators (MSOs) who do not have registrations and are not transmitting digitally encrypted signals in DAS Phase III areas after the 31 December deadline. The ministry said that 4A of Cable Television Network Regulation Act 1995 makes it obligatory for every MSO to transmit or re-transmit signals in digitally encrypted form from the date of notification. It further stated that under Policy Guidelines for Downlinking of Channels it is obligatory for broadcasters to stop providing signals to unregistered MSOs and local cable operators (LCOs).
