mpeg4 migration is not free for SD users?

Hi,
My father is also having TS SD connections since long time. I raised a request on behalf-of him thru online service to get mpeg4 box free of cost to view channels which he is not able to see. I got a reply by customer care as

We have some offers for this migration, which are as follows:
1. MPEG4 SD Zapper (12 months warranty) - Rs 500
2. HD Zapper (12 months warranty) - Rs 990
3. HD PVR (12 months warranty) - Rs 4990
Further we also want to inform you that you have to return your existing box and we will provide you box.
If you want to do MPEG4 migration, kindly conform the charges and call on our helpline numbers to migrate it, you may send an email also.

Do my father need to pay for such migration? Please guide.

Forgot to mention he is having Marathi pack which introduced new channel 9X Jhakaas and I heard soon all channels will be in mpeg4, that is why I raised request for him.

So, if someone take it without warranty and later do an annual recharge, then he will automatically get concession on engineer visit charges.

Btw they provide new STB or refurbished in exchange.

Did you see a message like "Your current set top box does not support this service" on some channels? coz I faced this similar issue and found out that I will be offered free upgrade of SD set top box. The upgrade carries one month warranty but for annual warranty you will have to pay Rs. 500. I found upgrade to higher set top boxes have attractive offers. Existing subscribers can return their box and bring home a new Tata Sky HD or Tata Sky+ HD connection at a special price (almost half the cost of original price). Also get 1 month waiver on HD Access Fee. + one year warranty. I opted for an HD+ connection, installation too was quick. Prompt service by Tata Sky.

unfortunately my parents are not a fan of TV and there is no HD TV at home. They just need it for news and religious channels. Its me who asked them to check channel 798 when I come to know from this forum that its launched and is in mpeg4. I was knowing my father is not having mpeg4 box so thought lets ask to TS to get some new settop box device.

Thanks all for your replies. The only thing I need to know if I will try to save money here by getting free upgrade if available, will they deliver new STB device?

I also found this reference on TS website. Not sure why TS customer care didn't write the first option of free upgrade in email reply to me.
